Gluten Free Food Tour: New York City

Updated: Mar 22

New York City is an exceptional place for gluten-free dining! It boasts numerous dedicated gluten-free spots within walking distance. Christina Heiser of Celiac Self Care (her newsletters are outstanding—subscribe if you haven't yet!) and I had an incredible time exploring the city for a gluten-free adventure. As an NYC local, she expertly crafted our itinerary.

Traveling from New Haven to NYC via the Metro North is both simple and cost-effective. The train journey took less than two hours, allowing me time to work on launching this website.

We only managed to explore the West Village. I'm already excited about my next visit to see another area of NYC. We went on March 1st, which was the first day of all the new March specials.

Modern Bread and Bagel

This was my first experience, and it totally exceeded all my expectations! I've been eager to visit since my diagnosis in 2019, and let me tell you, it was worth the wait! Their bagels are absolutely fantastic, and the baked goods? Just as impressive! I can't wait to go back and try their pizza too. Plus, the best part? Modern offers nationwide shipping for their bagels, so you can enjoy them at home without needing to trek all the way to the city.

What we ordered:

  • Latke tots

  • Creme brûlée donut

  • Halva humatachen

  • Blueberry humatachen

  • Chocolate babka

  • Pastrami Crusted Lox on an everything bagel with chive cream cheese

  • Matcha

Posh Pop Bake Shop

This place absolutely lives up to the hype! Ever since my diagnosis, it has been a must-visit for me. I love a creative dessert that perfectly satisfies my sweet tooth. Plus, they ship nationwide!

What we ordered:

  • Boston Cream Cheesecake

  • Churro Fried Oreos

  • Fluffernutter Brownie

Postcard Bakery

Though I hadn't heard of this place before, it came highly recommended. Postcard is a unique gluten-free Japanese bakery with a remarkable selection of tempting treats and sandos. Even though I was still full from earlier visits, I decided to at least get a bubble tea.

What we ordered:

  • Matcha with strawberry milk & boba

Senza Gluten by Jemiko

This is a renowned spot I've eagerly anticipated visiting throughout my celiac journey, and it absolutely lived up to its reputation! The food was exceptionally delicious and of high quality. While it's an Italian restaurant, Chef Jemiko infuses the menu with his unique Georgian flair—such as the amazing cheese bread!

Whar we ordered:

  • Georgian cheese bread

  • mushroom truffle ravioli

  • Almond Orange bread

  • Red velvet cake

  • Tiramisu

  • Bomboloni alla creme

  • Bomboloni alla nutella

Sushi Counter

This spot certainly deserves a spot on your list! Aussie-style hand rolls? Definitely! They're incredibly easy to savor and packed with flavor. The sushi combinations are both exciting and delicious. They also offer soy sauce in cute fish containers, making it easy to drizzle on your sushi and enhancing the experience. Plus, it's completely gluten-free! It's evident I'm not the only one who feels this way, as demonstrated by the line stretching out the door!

What we ordered:

  • Rolls: Spicy Tuna, cooked tuna, salmon, spicy salmon, cooked shrimp, miso eggplant, and California

  • Miso soup

  • Yuzu Lemonade

If you are ever in the area of these places, I HIGHLY recommend these places! I was fortune to be able to chat and talk to managers or owners of Modern, Senza Gluten by Jemiko, and Sushi Counter. I love connecting with these businesses. Those three places also gave me a complimentary meal in exchange for the posts but the reviews and opinions are my own!
